2 Pyramids on La Palma/Canary Islands

  1. The best known step pyramid of La Palma/Canary Islands is located above Cancajos near the capital St.Cruz (Braem 1995; Görlitz 2000; Calvet 2007).
  2. In summer 2007 Tarek Braem (Harald Braem's son) discovered a very well preserved step pyramid on the west coast of La Palma, in Aridane valley, topography El Paso. It is hiding in a lava flow field, completely covered by shrubs (Malpais). Its orientation shows obvious signs of astronomical relevance. There are winding stairs to a platform, resembling the Maya pyramids. In front there is a big stone circle (Tagoror), which looks identical to the sacred place on the holy mountain Idafe in Caldera de Taburiente. Chronics from times of the Spanish conquista tell about these temples, sacrifice places and rituals by the Guanche people (Galindo 1632; Marin 1694). This site probably is the sacred place of the Guanche King Mayantigo, who reigned in the Aridana Valley until the arrival of the Spaniards in 1492. Excavations are almost impossible, because the area is covered by lava from the 1585 eruption of Quemada (Cumbre Nueva). What lies underneath - we do not know.
